As we drive up into the hills of San Francisco my wife doesn’t know what to think, her eyes darting back and forth across the beautiful homes that only get nicer as we climb. I look over at her in the passenger seat and smile, the awkwardness of this morning a far and distant memory. Riley is back to her usual, excited self, and she’s going to be even more excited when she sees what I’ve arranged for her.

“Can you give me a hint?” Riley asks, literally squirming in her seat with excitement.

I think for a moment, and then finally give up. “If I give you a hint then it’s just going to give the whole thing away.”

“Please?” My wife begs. “Just one?”

I let out a long sigh. “Okay, fine. It has something to do with our talk this morning.”

Riley’s eyes go wide and she immediately sits back, trying to contain herself.

My GPS instructs me to turn left into the nearest driveway, so I do it and immediately end up in front of a gorgeous, looming mansion unlike anything I’ve ever seen. We park in the roundabout and I turn back to Riley.

“Ready for your music lessons?” I ask.

“Drums!?” Riley shouts.

I immediately cringe as she says this, knowing that there is sure to be disappointment coming close behind. I was hoping to meet her halfway, but as I watch the excitement on Riley’s face with the knowledge that I’m about to completely crush her joy, I wish I would’ve just gotten the fucking drum lessons instead.

“Actually.” I say, trying to think of some way to spin this so it doesn’t seem like such an utter failure on my part. I stammer for a moment and the eventually give up and just come out with it. “I got you piano lessons.”

Riley seems totally confused at first, and then with her understanding comes a tragically forced smile. “Okay,” she says awkwardly. “Thanks, Sarah.”

We sit in silence for a moment as I reel from the realization of just how hard I’ve been blowing it lately. “Well, I’ll be back in an hour to pick you up,” I tell her. “Have fun.”

Riley gives me one last strange glance and then steps out of the car. She looks up at the massive mansion, taking in its incredible size, and then starts making her way up the front walk.

Now alone in the car, I take a deep breath and try desperately to think of some way to turn this situation around. Riley and I have never really had any problems in our relationship, but recently our differences have become less and less charming. She’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to lose that to my own bizarre awkwardness.

I pull out of the driveway with a lot on my mind, ready to work it out on the road for a while. I promise myself that when I get back to pick her up, I’m going to have something for Riley that will make up for all of this, I just don’t know what it is yet.
